Common Signs You May Need a Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction Scottsdale, AZ

The thought of having a tooth extraction may worry you or stress you out. Be aware that this is not the first action the dentist will consider for an affected tooth. However, in some situations, removing it is what will effectively restore your health. If you are not sure whether you need this treatment, pay attention to some common signs. Certain issues will give you clues that you need to see your dentist for a tooth removal.

What to expect from a tooth extraction

This procedure can come in various forms. Sometimes, the tooth will have completely erupted and will be in place. In other situations, the tooth may have just started to emerge from the gums. Other extractions will occur when the tooth is still impacted. The methods the dentist will use for each of these can differ. If the tooth is impacted, the removal requires more extensive work, such as cutting into the gums and breaking the tooth into pieces to remove it.

After the removal, the patient should plan on resting for at least 24 hours. To ease any swelling, the patient can apply an ice pack to the area. To reduce pain and discomfort, taking over-the-counter medication can help. If the patient experiences bleeding, they should call the dentist right away.

Extreme tooth pain

Having a toothache does not necessarily mean that a person needs a tooth extraction. This is a common condition that can come and go. If the pain increases and is so severe that it affects the person’s quality of life, it probably means there is an infection. A root canal can often save an infected or profoundly decayed tooth. However, if this is so widespread that the treatment will not work, the dentist will have to remove the tooth to stop the infection from spreading.

The patient has gum disease

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is also common. It comes in various stages, beginning with swollen, bleeding gums. Untreated, the gums can begin to separate from the teeth. Tooth loss can occur, and bone loss can follow. In the most serious cases of the disease, a tooth extraction can help treat it. This will be the last resort, however.

There is crowding in the mouth

If a person has a small jaw or crooked teeth, the mouth could be crowded. Crowding can make it difficult and painful to chew. It is also troublesome to do a teeth-straightening treatment when the teeth are crowded and there is little room in the mouth. A tooth extraction can solve these problems. Removing some of the crowded teeth will also reduce the person’s risk of having cavities and abscesses.

Be aware of when you may need your dentist to pull out a tooth

Your permanent teeth are meant to last throughout your life. Unfortunately, there are times when trauma or neglect can lead to damage or tooth loss. The dentist may even see a tooth extraction as a necessary step to restoring your health. As you understand these factors, you can feel more prepared for this procedure.
