Why Dental Bonding Is Ideal for People With Sensitive Teeth

If you have sensitive teeth and need a restoration, consider dental bonding. At our Scottsdale dentist office, we know that no matter how well you take care of your teeth, there is a good chance you will need a dental restoration at some point in your lifetime. This is typically due to things beyond your control, like cracking a tooth while eating a piece of hard candy or chipping your tooth while playing sports. Yes, you can do certain things to decrease the risk of damage, but if something does happen to your tooth, you need to understand what your options are for restoring it.

As a cosmetic dentist, we can provide you with several types of solutions, including bonding, dental veneers, and dental crowns. If you damage your tooth, then you may need a dental crown. A dental crown is the most durable and protective solution. Since a crown is a cap that surrounds your tooth and prevents anything from touching it, this is a common solution for extreme cases. A dental veneer is a thin shell that we bond to the surface of the tooth to help restore cracks and chips. However, a dental veneer offers a lesser degree of protection.

While both of these options are highly effective, they do require us to remove a portion of your enamel before we can place either option. This is necessary for ensuring the restoration lays flat without making your teeth appear too large. While necessary and effective, if you have sensitive teeth, removing a portion of your enamel could cause you severe discomfort. Yes, we can minimize it, but you may want to consider a non-invasive solution like dental bonding.

Dental bonding really shines for its ability to restore a damaged tooth without the need to remove enamel. To prepare your tooth, it will be roughened and then moistened. However, your enamel needs to remain in place. Next, we can apply a tooth-colored bonding material to the tooth and shape it into place. Bonding can  correct a chip or crack while also being able to cover dark stains or close gaps between teeth. It is an incredibly simple, non-invasive, and fast solution.

Since we place and harden the material in one visit, you do not need to worry about using any temporary solutions or needing to come back in for a second appointment to finish the job. In this way, it is an incredibly convenient solution. If you have sensitive teeth, it may be the only logical solution because bonding does not harm your teeth in any way.

In fact, bonding can also help to decrease your sensitivity. Bonding essentially seals up your nerve endings by protecting them from the food you eat, what you drink, and even the air you breathe. For this reason, you may find your teeth become less sensitive after applying bonding material. To learn more about this option, call and schedule a dental examination with our Scottsdale dental office.
