Braces are a great way to correct teeth and jaw misalignments of all severity levels. However, braces are not removable, and they require extra care to ensure quality results and avoid any setbacks in the treatment process. This review discusses what maintenance is required during braces treatment.
Braces maintenance: here are tips from a dentist to follow
You can care for your braces and teeth throughout treatment by practicing good oral hygiene, checking for complications with the brackets and wires regularly, making smart choices with what you consume, reducing the risk of dental trauma, and making it into the office for all scheduled check-up visits.
Brush, floss, and use mouthwash regularly
Brushing and flossing with braces is slightly different than doing so without braces. Talk to your dentist about how to properly brush while wearing braces. It is also important to use mouthwash as directed by the dentist to keep the teeth and gums clean and free of harmful bacteria. You can also use a water pick, which many consider to be easier than flossing while wearing braces.
Check for any complications
It is also encouraged to check for any complications with the brackets and wires during braces treatment. Ensure that all of the brackets and wires are in good condition. If there are any issues with the brackets and wires, then be sure to notify the dentist as soon as possible and schedule a visit to have them fixed. Otherwise, there is a much greater risk of setbacks in the process.
Be careful with what you consume
It is important to avoid biting down on anything hard during braces treatment as well, such as hard candies, ice, and tough (or sticky) foods. Also, the risk of cavities is slightly higher with braces as well, so limiting the consumption of sugar and other carbohydrates is encouraged. Instead, consider drinking more water throughout the day, rather than soft drinks and other sugar-filled beverages. It is also encouraged to avoid smoking or tobacco use during treatment as well.
Reduce your risk of dental trauma
Dental trauma could lead to a setback in the orthodontic process. For those who play contact sports, engage in physical exercise that could lead to a blow to the mouth, or struggle with bruxism, it is important to take precautions to reduce the risk of trauma that damages the braces and teeth.
Visit the dentist for all scheduled check-ups
Last but not least, be sure to visit the dentist for all scheduled check-ups. Otherwise, the braces process can take much longer and issues that you may not have detected on your own may become worse.
