Emergency Dentistry Treatment for a Knocked-Out Tooth

Sometimes, you need to choose emergency dentistry to take care of an oral wellness issue. Usually, losing a permanent tooth falls into this category. Knocking out a tooth can be painful and may have effects on your health. An emergency dentist can provide prompt treatment and relief for this issue.

Ways that people lose permanent teeth

It is not uncommon for a child or adult to come to an emergency dentistry office to repair a knocked-out tooth. This often happens due to an incident such as a car crash or bike accident. Hard blows to the face from a slip and fall can also dislodge a tooth. Athletes in sports such as football, basketball and soccer can also experience a dislodged permanent tooth. People who do not practice good oral hygiene may have weak teeth. This can increase an individual’s risk of losing one.

Saving the tooth at emergency dentistry

After losing a permanent tooth, the patient should find it and try to reinsert it. The person should be cautious and make sure to hold it by the crown. If the tooth does not go back into the socket, the patient should place it in a saline solution. The individual should head to the dentist’s office right away. The dentist may be able to put the tooth back into the socket if the patient can get into the office within an hour of losing the tooth.

Root canal

Anytime a person loses a tooth, an emergency dentist will want to do a root canal. This enables the dentist to clean out any decay or infection. It will also relieve the person of any pain. This process prepares the individual for the next step of the treatment. This may include a bridge or dental implant. The dentist will use a local anesthetic to make the person more comfortable.

Splinting the tooth

If the dentist is able to place the tooth back into the socket, a splinting process will take place. At the emergency dentistry office, the dentist will use wire and other dental material to attach the lost tooth to the surrounding teeth. The splinting is not permanent; the dentist will determine how long it will remain in the patient’s mouth.

Advising the next steps

At the emergency dentistry office, the dentist’s job is to relieve pain and discomfort. The dentist will also try to salvage the tooth and retain the person’s full smile. The dentist may recommend that the patient get an artificial tooth. This procedure may occur at the general dentist’s office.

Do not give up on the tooth

If you lose a tooth, do not discard it. If you can find the tooth, head to an emergency dentistry office near you. If you are quick, the dentist might be able to preserve the tooth. Do not think you have to live with a gap in your mouth. Treatments and procedures are available to help you maintain a healthy smile. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, call the emergency dentist immediately and schedule an appointment.
