If your dentist has recommended Invisalign® to you or a family member, you probably have a lot of questions. This treatment is a good alternative to wearing traditional metal braces. Still, you may wonder whether it is as effective as other methods. Your dentist can answer these questions and address your concerns. It is also good to understand how the process works and what you can do to get the most out of these clear aligners.
First steps
Before getting serious about Invisalign, the patient should make an appointment with the dentist. The dentist can explain how the process works and what the person can expect while wearing the aligners. If the patient decides this is the right teeth-straightening method, the dentist will take X-rays and make 3D impressions of the person’s mouth. With this information, the dentist will make a treatment plan and design the first set of trays.
Effectiveness for children
Kids as young as age 7 can start teeth-straightening treatments. At this early period, the dentist can identify cosmetic and oral health problems for Invisalign to address. Early-stage treatment can start by correcting both crooked baby and permanent teeth. It can be more challenging for children to wear aligners, however. The child must be responsible for the trays and remember to clean them daily.
Effectiveness for teens
Invisalign is a good way to straighten teeth and correct bite dysfunctions in teenagers. These issues can be embarrassing and even affect a teen’s self-esteem. People who are self-conscious about their appearance can find success with clear aligners. The treatment is successful for adolescents, especially when they wear the aligners as the dentist directs.
Teens may have a tendency to take out the aligners more often than they should. Doing this will lengthen the treatment time. The aligners may not move the teeth as well. Teens, and all people who wear the trays, should remove them when eating and to clean them. The dentist will advise the individual to wear the trays 21 to 22 hours a day.
Effectiveness for adults
One of the benefits of Invisalign is that the treatment is usually shorter than it is with braces. Within three or four months, people can start to see results. Normally, the aligners can straighten teeth after an 18-month treatment. It can be longer for adult patients, though. It is critical that older patients keep appointments and clean the aligners regularly. This will help the trays do their job well and lead to the results that the patient wants.
Invisalign: a good choice for all ages
It does not matter how old you are: this treatment can work well. The trays are comfortable, removable, and convenient. The dentist has the knowledge and training to devise the right treatment plan to help you achieve your goals. You are responsible for the effectiveness of the treatment, however. Make sure you never misplace the trays or damage them in any way. Removing them when eating or drinking will help them stay clean and smell good.
