Reasons to Choose a Dental Implant to Replace a Missing Tooth

If you have a gap in your mouth, a dental implant could be the right cosmetic dentistry solution. Living without a tooth can pose many problems. Cosmetically, it can be embarrassing to have a missing tooth. It can also affect your ability to chew and speak properly. Fortunately, implants restore your mouth’s functions and can revive your smile. There are specific benefits to choosing this method.

The process of getting a dental implant

Of all the tooth-replacement and restoration procedures, implants are the most involved. This usually requires three or four visits to the dentist, spaced out several months. First, the patient will meet with the dentist for a consultation to discuss the process. The dentist will take X-rays and make impressions of the person’s teeth. If necessary, the dentist will extract any teeth that are beyond repair. At a following appointment, the dentist will numb the patient, make an incision in the gum, and insert screw-like posts into the jaw.

The patient’s gums will heal, and the posts will fuse to the bone over the next few months. The patient will come back into the office where the dentist once again exposes the gum. This time, the dentist places a smaller piece, called an abutment, on the post. After another period of healing, the person comes back into the office for the crown. The dentist places it on the abutment and checks to ensure it fits properly and looks good.

Implants are long-lasting

One of the biggest reasons to choose a dental implant is because it should do its job well for up to 20 years or more. For some patients, the implants will last for the rest of their life. The posts are made of titanium and make an effective root for the tooth. The abutment and crown can withstand wear and tear. The patient can eat most foods with implants.

Implants look real

It is almost impossible to detect that an individual has a dental implant. The crows are natural-looking. The dentist will ensure that they closely resemble actual teeth in size, shape, and color. The abutment and posts are not visible.

Implants let the individual have their smile and function

Implants fill in the gaps that the individual may have from losing a tooth. Placing the artificial tooth in the mouth helps to prevent other teeth from moving and bone from deteriorating. It will help to maintain the shape of the face. Except for some hard foods, the implants can chew just about anything.

A good solution for a missing tooth

If you have one missing tooth, or if you are missing a couple of teeth, a dental implant makes sense. This durable replacement option allows you to smile once more without worrying about feeling embarrassed. You can also resume a normal diet and speak without a lisp.
