Treatments for Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive Teeth Scottsdale, AZ

From time to time, many people have sensitive teeth and problems with this issue. However, if you are experiencing this frequently or if the sensation is getting worse, it is time to see a dentist. Your dental professional can recommend effective treatments to help you manage this condition. It is nice to know there are ways to enjoy eating and drinking the things you once loved. Do not put off a visit to your dentist any longer.

Cause of sensitive teeth

Sensitivity to certain stimuli in the mouth is a common challenge that dentists see in their patients. People can have these feelings because of exposed roots or worn-down enamel. Other factors include gum disease, a developing cavity, a cracked or broken tooth or a weakened filling. Some situations where people notice this sensitivity the most include:

  • Eating hot or spicy food
  • Drinking cold or hot beverages
  • Brushing teeth
  • Breathing in cold air

Try some toothpaste

A dentist may first recommend patients look for an over-the-counter toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Most drugstores and grocery stores should carry a variety of products. These toothpaste options can be effective at stopping the pain and irritation. Patients should stop using the toothpaste, however, if it is not effective. If this happens, the person should talk to the dentist and ask for an alternative.

Bonding time

If an exposed root is causing the sensitivity issue, the dentist may have the right solution in the office. For more minor problems, the dentist can apply composite resin to the exposed area. Before doing this, the dentist will numb the mouth to minimize or block any pain. This process will take 30 minutes or less.

Root canal for sensitive teeth

This procedure is for more severe sensitivity issues where an infection is causing the feelings. The dentist may take care of this over two or three appointments. It begins with an examination and X-rays so the dentist can determine the extent of the damage. Next, the dentist numbs the patient and then drills into the affected tooth to remove the pulp. This chamber holds critical blood vessels, nerves and tissue, where bacteria may have invaded. The dentist cleans out the area and kills the infection before sealing the tooth.

Fluoride

If worn-out enamel is the culprit, the dentist can give the patient fluoride. This can happen in the office during a checkup. If necessary, the dentist can also prescribe a fluoride. This allows the patient to use it conveniently at home.

Do not be so sensitive

It can be annoying and painful to have a sensitivity to food, drinks and other things that come into contact with your teeth. Luckily, there are effective ways to manage these issues so you will not have to live with the condition forever. Your dentist can offer several solutions to help you feel relief and comfort once again. Speak to your dental professional about your concerns. Schedule an appointment today.
