1. Wisdom tooth removal
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to develop. Most mouths don't have enough room for them to come in properly. When they get stuck under the gum or bone, they're called impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, swelling, infection, and trouble keeping the back teeth clean. Dr. Woodmansee reviews your X-rays with you and explains whether yours should come out and why. If they're healthy and can stay, he'll tell you that too.
2. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)
To support your recovery, Dr. Woodmansee can use platelet-rich fibrin, or PRF. It's made from a small sample of your own blood. Your platelets are rich in natural growth factors, and PRF places them right where you're healing. PRF is clinically proven to enhance healing. Because it comes from your own body, it's a natural addition to your care.
3. IV sedation
IV sedation helps most patients feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure. Giving the medication through an IV lets Dr. Woodmansee carefully control and adjust your sedation level as he goes, making it a highly predictable way to reduce anxiety, awareness, and memory of the procedure. Most patients remember little of the appointment. Your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels are monitored the entire time.
What to expect
Your consultation
We review your X-rays, health history, and medications, answer your questions, and go over your estimate and insurance benefits before you schedule.
Before your visit
You'll receive written instructions, including when to stop eating and drinking before your appointment. Please follow Dr. Woodmansee's instructions exactly. Plan for a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment and stay with you afterward. You won't be able to drive or go home alone after IV sedation.
The day of
A small IV is placed, usually in your arm or hand, and you'll begin to relax within minutes. Once you're comfortable, the area is numbed and your wisdom teeth are removed. Most patients are in the office for about 90 minutes.
Afterward
You'll rest with us until you're ready to go home with your driver. Your driver will receive written aftercare instructions. Plan to take the rest of the day easy.
Recovery basics
- The first day: Some bleeding and oozing is normal. Bite gently on gauze as directed and rest with your head raised.
- Swelling: It usually peaks around day two or three, then improves. Cold packs on your cheeks during the first day or two help.
- Comfort: Follow the medication plan Dr. Woodmansee gives you. Most patients manage soreness well.
- Food: Start with cool, soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and lukewarm soup. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or seedy foods until you’re cleared.
- Protect the healing sites: For the first several days, don’t use straws, smoke, vape, or spit forcefully.
- Back to normal: Many patients return to school or desk work within a few days.
Call us at (480) 439-0117 if you have bleeding that won't stop with pressure, a fever, or swelling or pain that gets worse after the third day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Does it hurt?
A. The area is fully numbed and IV sedation keeps you relaxed, so most patients are comfortable during the procedure. Some soreness afterward is normal, and we'll give you a clear plan to manage it.
Q. How long does it take?
A. Most patients are in the office for about 90 minutes. Plan to keep the rest of the day free to rest.
Q. What's the best age?
A. Many people have their wisdom teeth evaluated in their mid-to-late teens, when healing tends to be quicker. Adults can have them removed too. We recommend timing based on your X-rays, not just your age.
Q. How much does it cost? Is it covered by insurance?
A. Cost depends on how many teeth are removed, how they're positioned, and the type of sedation. Many dental PPO plans cover part of wisdom teeth removal. We'll give you a clear estimate before treatment and can talk with you about financing options.
Q. Do I need a referral?
A. No. Current patients can ask their dentist at any visit, and new patients are welcome to call us directly.
